‘Tyla just performed her hit song, Jump at Fly Time Fest’, ‘Saweetie is hosting a party tonight’, ‘Are you going to Gunna’s concert?’ Tourists and IJGBs struggled to catch their breaths in December, as it seemed there was an event every night… sometimes more than one. But for Lagosians, this was just Lagos being Lagos, and in December, they’ve got more free time.
The metropolitan city of Lagos, Nigeria, created an entertainment gold mine called Detty December. This is the colloquial term for the influx of concerts, festivals, and nighttime activities that dominate its December calendar.
Lately, the Detty December has become an international spectacle, with tourists and citizens in the diaspora flocking to understand what the singer-turned-politician Banky W meant by “Ain’t no party like a Lagos Party.“
Forbes Africa reports, “Independent research by advisory firm MO Africa Company Limited shows that between November 19 and December 26 last year, Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) handled around 550,000 inbound passengers. Nearly 90% of these arrivals were Nigerians living abroad, flying in primarily for leisure and tourism.”
Lagos’ nightlife has become both lucrative and entertaining, ranking sixth on Time Out magazine’s list of the best cities for nightlife worldwide. While this increase in popularity is often linked to the rise of Afrobeats, many would also credit the city’s vibrant atmosphere and beautiful women.
Lagos has placed itself at the forefront of fashion in Africa, and its unique style DNA can be spotted among its citizens. Nothing in Lagos whispers, and its fun and fashionable girls show a microcosm of their December.
